Travel Reporting: Costa Rica 2026

The Hitchcock Project visits La Selva Biological Station

In June 2026, 11 students from the Reynolds School of Journalism travelled with the Hitchcock Project to La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica to report on science and explore the tropical rainforest. This 3-credit travel reporting course was made possible through a partnership between the Hitchcock Project for Visualizing Science, Noticiero Móvil, the Reynolds School’s Spanish language media project, and KUNR Public Radio.

At La Selva, students worked on video, audio, and multimedia projects while exploring the rainforest, interacting with working scientists, and getting hands-on experience managing real-world reporting challenges (foggy camera lenses, poisonous snakes, humidity, and more!) Accompanied by KUNR reporter Lucia Starbuck, students received additional mentorship in sound-rich storytelling to help immerse audiences back home in the stories of the rainforest.

Follow the links on this page to view a selection of the projects that emerged. In addition to work published by the Hitchcock Project and Noticiero Móvil, stories were published by KUNR and Nevada Today. Upon returning home, students shared their work with the Reno community at Science Distilled, a public lecture series organized by the Discovery and UNR’s College of Science.
