Why is Lake Tahoe remarkably clear?

By Vanesa de la Cruz Pavas

Why is Lake Tahoe so remarkably clear? It’s all about the biological interactions, says Dr. Sudeep Chandra, director of UNR’s Global Water Center and co-chair of the Tahoe Science Advisory Council. In this video, science reporter Vanesa de la Cruz Pavas takes us on a deep dive into the biological processes and food-web interactions that play complex and important roles in lake clarity, including the introduction of non-native species of fish, clams, and Mysis shrimp.

This video was produced as part of a collaboration between the Hitchcock Project for Visualizing Science and the Tahoe Science Advisory Council during spring 2023, for an ArcGIS StoryMap called Understanding Lake Tahoe Water Clarity.
